Here's the story for anyone interested: That night, Fernando and his young siblings - three-year-old half-sister Esmeralda and five-year-old half-brother Luis - were home, being cared for by a babysitter and her boyfriend, when a fire sparked inside the single-story residence on J Street, near Toyne Street. The children’s mother was away, driving her eldest child back to college after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The fast-moving blaze proved to be deadly. Firefighters found Fernando’s body inside the burned out home. Esmeralda and Luis survived, but suffered critical injuries that left them both hospitalized. Today, the children remain in the hospital, with Esmeralda suffering from burns to about 40 percent of her body, while Luis has burns to 70 percent of his body. A portable heater being placed too close to a mattress may be the cause of the fire.

To those that watch this video that are “testing” try and follow through on these points. Money: at some departments some dudes take home 500k, but this job is it for them: Marriage problems, resentment from kids. The day you retire nobody will remember you in 2 weeks even if you were at the busiest station. It has been said that overtime is an opioid. Being a team player is a little different as well, from probation till being an engineer there is a term called “playing the game” its a type of fakeness you have to be that is not how adults act in real life. Its kind of like knowing your place in the seniority order or dudes will talk bad about you. You will also be judged on every single call even at 3am. One mistake and the battalion next to you will know about it by end of shift. Last point tragedy is real. Suicide is VERY real. PTSD claims usually get denied esp. by S***wick. But at least departments put on grand spectacles for their funerals though. Most guys dont get to that point, but drinking alcohol in the garage, being withdrawn from people, living above your means to alleviate guilt, and self sabotaging is where many dudes hover. Its a good job just don’t fall into the trap of dedicating your life to it, dedicate your life to your family first. This is still just a job. Just make sure you really know what you are getting into.

Have you seen or heard many stories of applicants who redo the hiring process after winning a civil service bypass appeal against the department and the department is ordered to hire them?

No we dont we have A hose reel witch is are quick attack then you have a the hoses we connect manually

I live in a small town in upstate New York (far away from New York City) our firemen make a lot of money. $100K for the chief, $85 for the lieutenants and like $75K for the rest. They fight one or two real fires a year. The rest of the year they polish the trucks and watch TV. 💸

Mike, I have a very crucial question. I have previous run ins with the law as a young adult. I have rehabilitated myself, and the new senate bill 731 in California calls for the automatic “sealing” of my past arrests. Please let me know if these sealed records are available to prospectors in the fire services hiring process!! Please!

I start my EMT classes next month, I am going towards a firefighter. But mannn I have a hard transition since I’m coming from being a Master Automotive Technician. I just felt the need to help others in a stronger way.

Mike, as a veteran of 34 years in the fire service with a major department I am surprised about your comments. I’ve been retired for several years but I think your issues you bring up are a fault of the department and if unionized the union. I highly suggest that you take your issues to the department and get them and the union to address these concerns. If you explain the concerns and with the backing of the union you should be able to correct the issues. Start having education nights for potential firefighters, share that information up front. The fire and police service is about going somewhere and dealing with someone’s worst nightmare and trying to make it better. Take the lead and make your job better. Yes, you have to make some sacrifices because of the nature of the job, but at the end of your shift you should also look back and be able to say, “I did my best to make a strangers life better.” On another note as a retired FD I am lucky to have a pension, very few companies offer that to their employees today. For those trying to live on social security alone you might as well forget about it, talk to someone who only has SS you’ll be surprised to see the difference in their future.

Being a retired Fire Lieutenant and at times instructor, it is refreshing to hear how clearly you explain the many different factors and procedures involved in making your fire ground tasks and eventual knock-down possible, many times on fire ground operations civilians see how calm we operate, I was asked by citizens why we were not running or rushing, I explained if you run your mind runs and things could be missed and much needed experience would be useless.

should do a video on what to expect in a volunteer fire company....1)firefighters blue light it to the fire house when there is a fire call 2)there is a roof siren on the fire house that trips for every call 3)the members vote on all their administration 4)Basic certificates are excepted here 5)they have monthly meetings conducted by table officers 6)the members have other back rounds other than fire fighting and earn an income out side of emergency services 7)they hold their own fund raising events

I’m about to be 30, just entered the EMT program for my certification. Then I’ll be off to the fire academy, luckily it’s all the college I attend.

Eyeball injuries got me. Life, limb, no problem, eyesight……I can live through the worst of the worst but eyeballs just get me.

40 years and this man speaks 100% truth. If you doubt or disagree, this career is not meant for you. Or you are one of those fastracked narcissists in a white shirt. I’ve already done some ride alongs with my dad and his crew ( he’s the officer ) and i’ve picked everyone’s brain from his to the proby they have on the crew , i feel like im ready but could always be more ready

We run high pressure hose reels initially to get the wet stuff on the red stuff within a minute, giving 3 to 5 minutes for hydrant supply to be established whilst a second low pressure high volume line is deployed and brought into use once hydrant supply is established. Makes initial use of tank supply last longer.

I'm a 23 year old female and I graduate collage next semester. I'm in reasonable shape. I go to the gym 3 times a week and do martial arts twice a week. (Still can't do a pull-up yet though - I'm working on it.) I don't like my my graphic design major anymore and after doing a graphic design internship and sitting in an cubicle for hours on end I've decided an office job isn't really for me. I'm brainstorming potential plan B jobs that are more hands-on. Fire-fighting and paramedic came to mind. Did not enjoy ROTC in college. If you have any advice for me I'd appreciate it.

I get a boot slip from my employer every year. I also spent a decade in the military. I have worn boots for a long, long time. of all the boots I have tried, both have safety toe options, waterproof options. top pick Danner, Marine Expeditionary Boot second pick redwing 2414 both can be resoled and if taken care of, will last for years. I am 6' and was 200# while in and went from 230-265 when out.
